Inaugural Blasting Launches Qushan Abandoned Mine Ecological Remediation Project

 On July 24, 2023, upon the detonation order issued by the site commander, the inaugural blasting for the Qushan Shenbao Building‑Stone Quarry Abandoned‑Mine Ecological Remediation Project, for which GN Energetic Blasting holds the general‑contracting responsibility, was completed successfully.

 Awarded in April of the same year with a contract value of RMB 107 million, the project is located in Qushan, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. It involves a total earth‑rock excavation volume of 5.3 million tons, and covers approximately 250 000 square meters for revegetation and land reclamation. The ecological remediation phase lasts 6 months, while ore‑extraction works will run for 18 months. The scope of works includes slope trimming (including blasting), greening by tubular vegetation bags plus thick‑substrate net‑hanging hydroseeding, vegetation‑bag cofferdams, soil covering, shrub planting and maintenance, retaining‑wall construction at slope toes, and base‑plate land reclamation.


Overview of existing slopes and base plate within the remediation zone

        Years of prior mining have created a base‑plate at approximately +14 m elevation as well as ten terraced benches ranging from +14 m, +34 m up to +175 m, forming an excavated slope as high as 182 meters. Constrained surrounding terrain and complex geological structures bring notable challenges including slow construction progress, large excavation volume and tight deadlines for slope revegetation. Attaching great importance to the assignment, the company immediately dispatched senior technical specialists to conduct on‑site surveys and measurements of site conditions, rock mass structures and remediation zones. Teams jointly reviewed the inaugural‑blasting location and key construction technologies, taking blasting safety, economic performance and construction schedule into full consideration. Following discussions between company management and on‑site technical staff, it was decided to carry out one‑shot blasting excavation for mountain sections above the +90 m platform. Drilling and blasting control techniques are adopted to form the final slope at 45‑degree gradient.


Precision Drilling Operations

 After the inaugural‑blasting design scheme was compiled, blasting‑simulation software was deployed to run animated simulations for design optimization. RTK technology was applied for precise positioning of each blast hole during hole layout. Every hole was inspected and measured individually upon verification. An over‑fill‑and‑under‑compensation approach was adopted to guarantee accurate drilling depth for each blast hole. Prior to charging, on‑site technical guidance was delivered and a safety‑and‑technical briefing meeting for blasting operations was held. During charging, specific personnel were assigned to designated holes with defined explosive loads, and dedicated inspectors performed checks. For detonation‑circuit connection, two technicians built the network while a third staff member conducted cross‑verification to ensure delay timing complied with design specifications. For detonation‑zone security, staff were assigned to fixed posts and executed perimeter‑security procedures upon official orders. Detonation was carried out strictly under instructions from the chief blasting commander. Thanks to accurate surveying, well‑refined design, meticulous construction and rigorous protection measures, the blasting achieved expected performance. Rock mass was sufficiently fragmented, while adverse impacts such as blasting vibration and fly‑rock were kept within permissible limits. The operation delivered safe, reliable, environmentally sound and cost‑effective construction outcomes

 The successful inaugural blasting lays a solid foundation for overall project delivery and marks the start of formal construction activities. Representing another practical case for GN Energetic Blasting in abandoned‑mine remediation, this project contributes technical expertise and practical strength toward the national goal of “lush mountains and clear waters”!
